Stanley L. Philips (29/01/1934 – 21/05/2021)
We mourn the passing of gentleman Stan Phillips aged 87 yrs.
Stan joined the choir in January 1974 (at 40yrs of age), was awarded life-membership in 1999 and ably contributed to the second tenor section of the choir for over 47 years.
We believe he joined the choir soon after moving over the bridge to Swansea to take up a responsible post at the then new national Driver & Vehicle Licensing Centre at Morriston. Stan became the “agony aunt” for all the choristers vehicle and driving queries, but John Watkins 12 driving penalty points was a bridge too far!
Three years after Stan joined, Ted Phillips (no relation) joined and with others so named the Phillips’ formed a powerful group particularly within the second tenor section. Stan and Ted did everything together in the choir, rehearsed, met, travelled and lodged on overnight stays or tours. Stan would take his car to Ted’s house and they then met the coach at “Ma Bakers” Shop in Tycoch for the onward journey. Ironically, Ted passed away just six months before Stan.
In recent years Stan suffered many spells of poor health and after loosing his wife, relied on assistance of family and neighbours. In it all Stan totally enjoyed the choir and recently embraced the technicalities of Zoom rehearsals – not bad at 87.
This epitomises Stan’s determination to conquer Welshness, Choral singing and technology and did all with distinction.
Thanks for your significant contribution to Dunvant Male Choir – we miss you already.
